Single Travelers to St. Barts

The MSNBC website had an article out title "Top trips for singles" which mentions the following:

"One such outing is a six-night yoga retreat at the Hotel Isle de France in St. Barth. Solo travelers can take daily group yoga classes on the beach or at the spa's indoor studio. For the solitary, there are meditation classes, and a spa menu that includes outdoor Thai massage and spine treatments. Afternoons are generally free, so singles will have plenty of time to explore the island and its many beaches on their own or with others on the retreat. They can also unwind in one of the hotel’s 34 guest rooms - each one has a spacious marble bath and overlooks lush gardens."

Hurricane Dean

Hurricane Dean looks to be not a huge event for St. Barts - the storm passed well south of the island. The only working webcam we can find is the always reliable airport cam, and it doesn't even look like it is raining on St. Barts at the moment.

If any locals would like to leave a comment or email us some first hand observations, we would appreciate it.

Papaguyo.jpegCatch Papaguyo and Friends almost every night starting at 9:00 pm at La Plage Beach Restaurant at the Tom Beach Hotel in St Jean. Papaguyo is a percussionist with imagination! If something can be used for percussion, he’ll try it. He always has a variety of accomplished musicians who play with him, providing a delightfully entertaining evening of food, drinks and music right on the beautiful beach of St Jean.

He’ll be playing music from the likes of Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Donna Summer, Barry White, James Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Police, The Doors, Dire Straits and many more. Be sure to check out this “Irish pub” in St Barth for a change of pace.

A Few Restaurant Events

Manapany%20Hotel.jpegThroughout August, the Manapany Hotel in Anse des Cayes is offering tapas every Wednesday evening priced from 7 € to 12 € per plate. And, every Friday evening, they have a “Menu Langouste” for 50 € per person. Don’t forget to bring your bathing suit! If you dine at a hotel on St Barth, you can use their pool, and the Manapany’s is beautiful (see our photo).

Every Tuesday night, La Marine on La Pointe in Gustavia offers a Caribbean BBQ with “Menu Langouste” for 69 € and a Chicken and Ribs buffet for 39 €. On Thursdays and Fridays, they have Mussels and Fries for 22 € (the mussels arrive every Thursday from France). La Marine is directly on the harbor and is a lovely spot for dinner.

Yet Another DVD about St Barth!

In addition to De Mémoire d’Anciens, which premiered at the St Barth Film Festival in April 2007, and the new DVD Saint Barthélémy: Cap Paradis by Pierre Brouwers, word of another DVD about St Barth has surfaced: L’Ile Amicale – Den Vanliga On. This DVD is actually a home movie taken by a Swedish baron who visited St Barth in the winter of 1951-1952. There is no verbal audio, only background music, but the scenery from 55 years ago will show you a different island. The DVD can be purchased at Nils Dufau's shop, which is a standalone building next to the gas station in St Jean.

Destination Weddings & Honeymoons on St Barts

Destination Weddings are weddings that take place away from where the bride and groom live. They happen in some of the most exotic and wonderful places in the world. These types of non-traditional weddings provide the bride and groom with dreamy settings, while doubling as an opportunity for guests to experience a place they have never been before.

“Today’s couples are more educated, sophisticated, and better traveled than couples of past generations. More affluent than past marrying couples, 27% of these Generation Y couples ( children of the baby boomers and twice the numbers ) will pay for their entire wedding, and they want something different for themselves and their guests; they want to be pampered and taken seriously.

In the year 2006, nine percent of weddings in the United States were destination
weddings, which is a 200% increase in the last ten years. Generation Y couples are tired of the “themed” weddings that became so prevalent and overused in the past. They want to experience different cultures and real settings rather than a “staged” wedding.” says Founder and President of June Wedding, Inc. ®, Robbi Ernst III and author of Great Wedding Tips From the Experts.

“Although women are still the primary decision makers of the wedding plans, men are more involved today than couples of the generation that preceded them, 83% of today’s couples are employed full time; they work hard (they are paying a mortgage and own one or two automobiles between them). Equally, they want to play hard; realizing that they are together rarely, they want to plan events that will bring them closer. As well, they want to create deep and meaningful memories for the family and friends. Since most couples are not getting married in the areas where they grew up, their time with family and friends is all the more precious and important to them. If they can do this in a unique or even an exotic setting, all the more enticing,” Ernst adds.

St Barthelemy, located in the French West Indies, is that exotic setting today’s bride is looking for. It is the Monte Carlo of the Caribbean, without the traffic jams but with the added advantage of flawless beaches. Shortened to Saint Barth in French and St Barts in English it is an exclusive eight square mile (21 sq km) embodiment of 24-carat French chic. It attracts millionaires on luxury yachts, movie stars and French expatriates fleeing the European winter. It is a Caribbean island where relaxation and Gallic style under a tropical sun have been refined to perfection.
Few islands worldwide, can match the unique blend of style, nature and history that is St. Barts. This tiny island has significant appeal where 'quality' is most certainly more important than 'quantity'... an island far away from the normality of life, making it the perfect wedding destination.

St. Barts is surrounded with turquoise waters, situated near the northern end of the Lesser Antilles group in the French West Indies. At a distance of 200 kms from the island of Guadeloupe and 25 kms from Saint-Martin. It is a mountainous island whose only flat area is occupied by the airport’s runway. As the climate is rather dry, agriculture has never been developed, thus throughout history few slaves had ever been employed. For the most part, St. Bartians are descendants of Breton and Norman fisher folk. Many are of French and Swedish ancestry, the latter evident in their fair skin, blond hair, and blue eyes.
St. Barts’ beaches are renowned for being some of the most beautiful and pristine in the world. Many are found in small coves, which have been protected from development by strict environmentally friendly zoning. Unlike many of its neighboring Caribbean islands, it has not been overrun with prefab condos and large chain hotels. There are six 4 star hotels all featuring romance packages for the wedding or honeymoon couple. All are of single story design, some as one building and others as separate single bedroom villas. Four are located on the beach (perfect for reading-of-the-vows ceremony) the other two are high on the hills with magnificent views of the island and setting sun. Each hotel has been uniquely designed, blending into the surrounding terrain. Luxury and elegance is felt in each environment.

St. Barts features some of the best cuisine in the Caribbean. The island has over eighty restaurants featuring culinary styles ranging from classic French to Asian to West Indian.
Many of the restaurants attract gourmet chefs trained in France to oversee their kitchens. These chefs can also be reserved to serve guests in the intimate privacy of their own villa for any special event or treasured evening. Villas on the island offer breath taking views and the perfect setting for your reception, especially with your own private French chef.

Nightlife of St. Barts is diverse as well. Visitors looking for late-night pleasures can listen to live jazz at a café or dance the night away at one of the local discos or after hours clubs.

St. Barts is also a duty-free port, rated as one of the premier shopping destinations in the Caribbean. The capital Gustavia is the principal shopping area of the island. There are boutiques and emporiums for the most sophisticated shoppers, featuring luxury brands such as Cartier, Hermes, Dior to name a few. The island hosts numerous health and beauty clinics and fitness centers catering to the island's upscale clientele.
It is important to realize that planning a wedding in a foreign country still has the usual concerns and worries of any home based event; there is the additional stress that something could go wrong in a different location. Aside from making travel reservations for the group, a couple needs to consider local legal issues. For instance, marriage in St Barts is not a legal ceremony, rather it is viewed as a spiritual ceremony. For this reason and others, travelers planning to marry in any foreign country should give serious consideration to hiring a local, home based Wedding Consultant for guidance and advice as well as an on-site Wedding Consultant at the particular destination. .The on-site Consultant will insure that the hosts of the event have all the required documentation, that every detail is planned long before arrival and that only the most competent, professional and expert wedding vendors with proper contracts will provide their services . These on-site Consultants can also provide any needed assistance if the couple chooses to bring along some of their own vendors (e.g. the photographer, floral designer, videographer, etc.). They will check that each client and guest is properly retrieved at the airport, that they are provided with the planned-for-accommodations, and that they are well rested from travel before beginning the schedule of any local tours and sightseeing prepared for in advance. Moreover, the on-site consultant can also suggest local customs that will make the wedding truly unique, one that family and friends alike will talk about for a very long time.

“Premium IV is truly one of the foremost on-site specialists. Located on St Barts they are members of AFWPI (Association for Wedding Professionals International) and JWI (June Wedding, Inc®). The management team of Premium IV is made up of three experts in service: a successful Canadian entrepreneur, an English expert in receptive tourism and a French restaurateur who have provided magnificent service in the best restaurants and hotels in France, the UK, USA, and St Barts. Additionally, the highly qualified and bilingual staff (French and English) have many years of experience in the island way of life.

They will provide the ultimate in V.I.P. services. Premium IV has brought together, under one umbrella, only the best that St Barts has to offer. With over 120 contracted partners providing approximately 450 products and services. There is virtually no request that Premium IV cannot arrange,” says International Travel Writer, Jesse Nash.

Any special event wedding, honeymoon or other special event that takes place on St. Barts is special and memorable simply due to the Island’s own enchanted ambiance and unique hospitality. The St. Barts experience is all the more enhanced when it is under the direction of a competent Consultant and Director, at home and on the Island. But the Consultant or Director who leaves nothing to chance, who sees to it that not only is the St. Barts experience itself is magical, one that will be treasured forever in the hearts and memories of the travelers, the staff of Premium IV takes the added steps of communicating with the client and/or their home based Consultant before arrival on St. Barts so that every detail is discussed, decisions determined and firmed up in writing, and that from the moment the client and guests set foot on St. Barts, they enter into a well scripted, stress-free atmosphere and they will be completely at ease and confident that all the planning will play out like as closely as possible to their dreams.

Those Summer Beach Festivals Just Don’t Stop!

While the summer months in St Barth tend to be a bit quiet and many restaurants are closed, you could not be on the island at a better time if you want to participate in the summer beach festivals that are held by the local towns. July 21-22 was the Festival of Anse des Cayes, held this year on the beach at the Manapany hotel. Saturday was chock full of competitions: dominoes, bélote, pétanque and a paddle boat race. As usual, there were other games throughout the day as well as food and drink and music and dance in the evening. Following just the next weekend, July 28-29, was the Festival of the Quartiers du Nord (Colombier and Flamands), which was held at the tennis courts of ASCCO. Again, there were competitions of dominoes and bélote, followed by a demonstration of ping-pong by a French champion. A dance exhibition of Flamenco was followed with music by local favorites Les Falcos.

The Pitea Day celebration is August 14-15 and is held on the commercial dock in Public. The annual fishing competition will start early in Tuesday morning, with the fisherman returning mid-afternoon to weigh in their catch. Competitions in dominoes and pétanque will take place at 7:30 am on Wednesday, August 15. Raffle tickets are available at CCPF, Alma, GDM, La Rôtisserie in St Jean as well as in numerous other stores on the island. The drawing will be August 15 on the dock in Public at 5:00 pm. First prize in two tickets from St Martin to Paris via Air France! There are ten other prizes, including dinner for two at The Wall House, a “one-for-two” ticket from St Barth to St Martin on The Voyager and a motorcycle helmet.

A Day at the Hotel St Barth Isle de France

http://www.caribbean-on-line.com/st-barts/images/isledefrance-thumb.jpegUntil August 31, you can spend a day of pampered bliss at the Hotel St Barth Isle de France in Flamands for only 95 €. This special offer includes a fruit cocktail, either an appetizer and main dish or a main dish and dessert at the hotel’s restaurant, a discount at the boutique and your choice of the following three treatments at The Spa: a massage, a facial and other face care treatments, or a body polish and surprise gift.

French Gypsy Music at the Carl Gustaf

http://www.caribbean-on-line.com/st-barts/images/gustaf-thumb.jpegFrom July 19 until August 21, the Carl Gustaf Hotel in Gustavia is hosting musician Richard Manetti on Thursday and Fridays evenings at its Sunset Bar, starting at 6:00 pm. Manetti plays jazz manouche, “Gypsy jazz”, and was heavily influenced by guitarist Django Reinhardt, who was popular in the 1930s. Reinhardt combined the dark, chromatic Gypsy flavor with the Swing music that was popular at the time. The combination of Gypsy music with swing is critical to the style of “jazz manouche.” In this style of music, the rhythm guitar is playing using a percussive technique, “la pompe”, that serves to replace drums.

Manetti has been playing the guitar since age 10 and will be accompanied by Christophe Lagane or Natacha Lockwood.

Keeping Traditions Alive

http://www.caribbean-on-line.com/st-barts/images/pirogue-thumb.jpegA pirogue, similar to a canoe, has been used since the arrival of the first St Barths. However, this traditional canoe was at risk of disappearing. Fortunately, the Unesco club is involved in the building of a true St Barth pirogue, following the traditional methods. The pirogue is 18 feet long and is made from the trunk of a gommier tree that arrived from Dominica last April 26. The gommier is native to St Barth, but most were destroyed by Hurricane Luis in 1995. The pirogue is awaiting its last coat of paint and will be inaugurated on August 15. It will be on display, but will also be put into the water for events such as the arrival of the Transat Ag2r, the summer beach festivals and regattas, to name a few.

Summer Evenings at Le Ti St-Barth

http://www.caribbean-on-line.com/st-barts/images/Le%20Ti-thumb.jpegLe Ti St-Barth, a Caribbean tavern and restaurant located in Pointe Milou, has a different event planned for each day of the week throughout August.

On Mondays, you’re invited to the Marrakech Party with belly dancers, shopping at “Ti Souk”, and fresh mint tea. Couscous Royal is served for dinner along with traditional accompaniments for 59 €. The theme every Tuesday is “Night Fever.” Dress code is “wigs and colors.” Wednesday nights go a little retro with the “Plastic Boots Party” mixed by Carole, the owner. The dress code, of course, is plastic boots. Thursday is “Angel Night” when everyone is asked to wear white. “The Crazy Nights” take place on Friday and Saturday. It is almost certain that you’ll see people dancing on the tables and…well, you’ll just have to find out for yourself!

Reservations are recommended: 05 90 27 97 71 or info@ksplaces.com. Closed on Sundays.

Changes to Come as Result of New Overseas Collectivity Status

The elections of July 1 and July 15, 2007, confirmed Bruno Magras, as President, and his Territorial Council as the administration of the new Overseas Collectivity of St Barth. Some decisions have already been made regarding certain aspects of taxation for residents and non-residents. As an Overseas Collectivity, Saint Barth remains French, subject to the French Constitution. The new political status simply gives St Barth more autonomy relative to local issues.

Question number one: Who is considered a resident for tax purposes? A person’s tax domicile will be considered to be in Saint Barth after they have resided on the island for at least a five-year period. For a non-French resident, the tax domicile only pertains to assets owned in St. Barth. These assets will be taxed as if they were domiciled in France, or perhaps Guadeloupe, depending on the modifications made to the Draft Tax Treaty. Income and other revenue earned on the island by non-residents will be taxed pursuant to the Draft Tax Convention, under the tax laws and directives of Metropolitan France.

The following information pertains only to non-residents and not to taxes to be paid by French or St Barth residents.

1. Income Tax is due to the extent income is earned and a profit is generated in St Barth. The tax is due payable in France, with credits applied for the purposes of U.S. taxes.
2. Transfer Taxes - A one-time transfer tax when purchasing real property on Saint Barth is already required. Now, the larger portion of the transfer tax will remain on Saint Barth rather than being paid to the Department of Guadeloupe.
3. Capital Gains Taxes - Anyone who sells real property on the island has been subject to capital gains taxes. For non-French, non-European sellers, the capital gains tax is 33.33%. There is currently no indication of any changes in the capital gains tax rates.
4. Tourist Tax - A tax on tourists will be instituted in the amount of 5% of the gross hotel room, vacation villa, or other vacation accommodation.
5. Port Duty - A port duty of 4% is currently due on the invoice or market value of all goods and merchandise brought into Saint Barth. The plan is to increase the port duty to 5%.
