Major Earthquake in Martinique Felt on St Barth

The earth did indeed move on St Barth yesterday afternoon - for about two minutes. On Thursday afternoon, November 29, the strongest earthquake in the Caribbean in over 200 years struck Martinique (photo at left). The earthquake measured 7.4 on the Richter Scale and was centered at a depth of 90 miles in the Caribbean Sea between Martinique and Dominica. The strongest quake in the Caribbean measured 7.9 in 1766. The tectonic plate responsible for this activity is the Caribbean Plate, which underlies Central America and the Caribbean Sea off the north coast of South America. Fortunately, because of the depth of the quake, no tsunami was predicted. Unofficial measurement of the activity in St Barth was 4.0.

I am not currently in St Barts, but a friend of mine was on Saline Beach during the earthquake.
He says that it felt really strange to be shaken back and forth, while sitting naked in the sand.

Probably would have felt strange with clothes on too! :)

Dear Sir and Madam,
I´m Jürgen from Germany.
I saw a TV report about St. Barth. This is a very nice place with a many nice buildings.
But sometimes there are earthuqakes in Caribbean Sea. The earthquake from 29th of November with a Magnitude 7.4 on the Richter Scale was the intensity in St. Barth 4.0.

What is if an stronger earthquake is near and will arrieve St. Barth with an intensity in Barth of 7-8? Are the buildings earthquake resistent?
Do you have a warning system in the building?

I question you therefore, because we have developed a system for exactly this case for private houses.
Do you interest I will give you more information about our system. The price of one detector and two sirens is 1980.-US$.
Kind regards,
Jürgen

Most earthquakes in the Caribbean - and there are many - happen in deep sea trenches. While the tremors are felt on the islands often (I experienced several on St. Thomas in the space of a couple of years), the one that took place recently on Martinique is pretty rare.
