Yet Another Series of Musical Performances with Papaguyo and a Special Guest

papaguyo-series.jpgPapaguyo, an American who spends most of his time on St Barth, is perhaps one of the most well-known musicians on the island. An extremely talented percussionist, he invites numerous musicians to join him. Over the next several weeks, kamille from karmina, who sings and plays guitar, is a CBS Sony artist who will be joining him for performances across the island playing their brand of California vibe'zzz.

Portuguese Culture on St Barth

As many of you may know, St Barth has quite a large Portuguese population. Last May, they created a folklore troupe that currently meets every Saturday to learn and rehearse traditional dances dating from 1900 to 1910. The troupe first performed during Swedish Week last November. They are reviving many traditional dances from the northern region of Minho that have disappeared as well as learning other traditional dances of Portugal. Their linen costumes are made by hand in Portugal. All of the dances are accompanied by traditional Portuguese instruments such as the accordion, the tambourine, the guitar, castanets, the triangle and a small Portuguese guitar called the Cavaquinho. Expect to see more performances in the future.

Bits and Pieces

Word has it that the recently opened restaurant Central Parc in Gustavia has closed. This restaurant was opened by one of the two brothers who own L'Entracte (The Blue Coconut along the harbor).

St Barth Bucket the Largest Yet

This year's 14th edition of the St Barth Bucket Regatta saw the largest number of entries in the history of this spectacular regatta with 35 participating sailing yachts. The largest yacht this year was again the magnificent Maltese Falcon at 289'; the smallest was Wild Horses at 76'. The overall winner was the 170' Meteor. In second place was the 98' Windcrest, while third place went to the 180' Adela. Just goes to show that size isn't everything. There were several other winners in categories such as Racing Class, Cruising Class, Best Performance by an Alloy Yacht and All-Star Crew Award, which was won by the Maltese Falcon.

More Parades in Gustavia

The book Les aventures de Monbarsgold: Corossol - Terre d'Amour et de Partage is the first children's book to be published in patois and English and is for sale in all the bookshops and at the grocery store Match in St Jean for 9.90 euros. To celebrate the publication of this book, the first of several parades featuring the characters of the book will take place in Gustavia on April 18 at 3:30. The characters will autograph the book at 4:30 pm on the quay in Gustavia.
