Le Pourquoi Pas?, an oceanographic ship of the French institute for research of the sea and of the hydrographic and oceanographic service of the Navy, is in the waters around St. Barth. Its mission is to re-chart the sea access to St Martin, St. Barth and the channel of Anguilla. The last time these waters were charted was in 1950. It is also hoped that this exercise will provide some insight to the volcanic and seismic activity in the area and an understanding of the risk of tsunamis.

The municipality of St. Barts has published 60,000 copies of the new official map of the island. The map, printed on thick, glossy paper, is in English and French and includes information often requested by tourists (such as the location of panoramic views and historic monuments) as well as information regarding zones protected by the Marine Reserve and the location of drug stores, gas stations and banks. On the reverse side, a large map of Gustavia shows the direction of traffic through town, the location of the post office, hospital and ferry terminal and other similar useful information. Half of the maps were distributed throughout the island, while the remaining 30,000 are available at the Municipal Tourist Office and the Port of Gustavia.

The two-day festival of Lorient, held August 12 and 13, kicked off a week of festivals. Saturday was the day for the tournaments: ping pong, belote (a French card game) and pétanque. On Sunday, after mass at the Catholic church, balloons were released on the beach, followed by numerous games, a regatta and the arrival of the fishing boats. The drawing of the raffle tickets was held Sunday night, with first prize being a new car. Both nights concluded with music and dancing on the tennis courts of A.J.O.E.
