St Barth to Become a PTOM

St Barth is in the midst of changing its political status once again. Not too long ago, the island became a Collectivity, which among other things, gave it more financial autonomy and less administrative association with Guadeloupe. Now, St Barth is poised to become a PTOM in January 2012. We'll have to wait and see what possible tax and other changes this new status brings with it.

What is a "PTOM"?

Posted by: Janice Luft at May 21, 2010 11:36 AM

PTOM = Pays et Territoires d'outre mer (Overseas Countries and Territories). St. Barth, as a part of Guadeloupe, has so far had DOM (Departement d'outre mer) status which makes it just another state of France (as Hawaii is to the USA) but the PTOM status would turn it into a sort of protectorate (as American Samoa is to the USA).

Merci Sebastian for the clarity on a "PTOM".
