Papaguyo, an American who spends most of his time on St. Barth, is perhaps one of the most well-known musicians on the island. An extremely talented percussionist, he invites numerous musicians to join him. Over the next several weeks, kamille from karmina, who sings and plays guitar, is a CBS Sony artist who will be joining him for performances across the island playing their brand of California vibe'zzz.

Buddha Bar vs Barrio Latino - On Friday, November 28 and Sunday, November 30, The Yacht Club in Gustavia and the Manapany Hotel in Anse des Cayes, respectively, will present two famous DJs: David Visan and Carlos Campos. Visan has recorded for the Buddha Bar music series, which is a compilation of various types of music released by George V records. After studying music at the Los Angeles Music Institute, he returned to Paris and worked with the DJ Claude Challe, the pioneer of the Buddha Bar concept. He is currently a DJ at the Buddha Bar in Paris. Carlos Campos, who was born in Santiago, Chile, has a background of Latin-American, Hispanic and French origins. He went to Paris at age 16 and later became a dancer and choreographer. He has since channeled his energy into music and was the first resident DJ at the Barrio Latino club in Paris. He also has worked with Claude Challe. These are sure to be two interesting and exciting nights of music!
Come out to Caviar Island in Gustavia on November 24 to hear funk, jazz and blues with Days of Wild from New York City. Many of you frequent visitors to St. Barth might just recognize that guy in the middle with the pink bandana as Papaguyo, a long-time percussionist on the island who always attracts a crowd. Days of Wild started out with a guitar player, a bass player, a drummer and a singer who originally got together to play the music of Prince. The band has since grown to include a full horn section and a keyboard player and has become one of the most popular funk bands in NYC. This one's a no-brainer!
Didn't the NY Times do one of these last winter too? I guess you can always find a writer willing to spend some time on St. Barts:
"GETTING to St. Barts isn't easy, not even with your own Gulfstream. On the final leg, trade your million-dollar jet for a tiny puddle jumper, before threading between two jagged peaks and touching down on a teensy runway that, islanders like to joke, is as short as an aircraft carrier's. That might explain the island's exclusivity. Although Jay-Z, Beyoncé and a rotating cast of celebrities have kept St. Barts in the tabloids, this tiny French island still exudes a chic, laid-back vibe unspoiled by gawkers and day-trippers. And despite a new wave of wine bars, chichi boutiques and designer restaurants, the island's main attraction remains its luscious white sand beaches, fringed by the pool-blue waters of the Caribbean."
Lots of good stuff mentioned in the article along with many phone numbers, websites, etc.
With the holiday celebrations in full swing, be careful of drinking and driving. The penalties are stiff. Recently, an American citizen was stopped for an alcohol test while driving a rental car. She tested positive with 0.50 mg of alcohol per liter of air exhaled. The penalty? She was asked to pay the fine of 800 euros and to leave the island if she didn't want to go before a judge. That's one fast way to ruin your vacation! Under French law, the legal level of alcohol in the blood is 0.5 grams per liter of blood. If you have up to 0.8 grams, you risk a fine of 135 euros. Higher than that level, if there hasn't been an accident, you must pay a fine immediately. If there has been an accident, you must go before the judge. The sentence for drunk driving can be up to two years in prison and up to 4500 euros in fines. Think before you drink!
More St Barts Music Festival news from Wimco:
The St Barts Music Festival 2008 runs for two weeks this year, from January 11 through January 23, 2008. Advanced tickets to performances are not necessary, just come to the island and pay at the door - the old-fashioned way!
Since 1984, St. Barts has hosted a performing arts festival unlike any other in the world. Each year during January St Barts offers more than a dozen nights of the finest live music and dance performances in an informal, island setting.
Audiences are treated to intimate concerts by some of the world's most prominent classical, opera, ballet, and jazz stars. These performers have the level of artistry that one would normally have to attend Carnegie Hall in New York or the Opera Garnier in Paris to experience. Imagine hearing them with the added advantage of island breezes and the fragrance of flowering hibiscus.
There's more.
Catch Papaguyo and Friends almost every night starting at 9:00 pm at La Plage Beach Restaurant at the Tom Beach Hotel in St Jean. Papaguyo is a percussionist with imagination! If something can be used for percussion, he'll try it. He always has a variety of accomplished musicians who play with him, providing a delightfully entertaining evening of food, drinks and music right on the beautiful beach of St Jean.
O'Corner in Gustavia is hosting a "Back to Basics" evening every Thursday beginning at 10:00 pm with DJ Jacques Dumas. He'll be playing music from the likes of Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Donna Summer, Barry White, James Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Police, The Doors, Dire Straits and many more. Be sure to check out this "Irish pub" in St Barth for a change of pace.
From July 19 until August 21, the Carl Gustaf Hotel in Gustavia is hosting musician Richard Manetti on Thursday and Fridays evenings at its Sunset Bar, starting at 6:00 pm. Manetti plays jazz manouche, "Gypsy jazz", and was heavily influenced by guitarist Django Reinhardt, who was popular in the 1930s. Reinhardt combined the dark, chromatic Gypsy flavor with the Swing music that was popular at the time. The combination of Gypsy music with swing is critical to the style of "jazz manouche." In this style of music, the rhythm guitar is playing using a percussive technique, "la pompe", that serves to replace drums.
Manetti has been playing the guitar since age 10 and will be accompanied by Christophe Lagane or Natacha Lockwood.
