Passport possible date postponement

Postby KarenS » Thu Jun 22, 2006 10:58 am

From Travel Weekly:
CARIBBEAN WEEK in New York wrapped up June 16 with a push by tourism officials to postpone to June 2009 the first phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, currently set to take effect Jan. 1, 2007. Phase 1 would require all citizens to possess a valid passport when entering the country from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Mexico, Latin and South America and Canada by air or sea. "A postponement would help bolster awareness of the new requirement and give travelers more time to get passports," said Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, secretary general of the Caribbean Tourism Association.

MEANWHILE, government and tourism officials are alarmed that the number of applications for new U.S. passports "has been nowhere near the numbers we wanted," Vanderpool-Wallace said. "I will not be comfortable until at least 90% of the U.S. market has passports."

Passport Deadline delayed

Postby KarenS » Mon Sep 18, 2006 7:28 am

Passport deadline delayed again

The deadline for U.S. citizens to have passports for re-entering the country by air or sea from Canada, most of the Caribbean and Mexico has been delayed a week, to Jan. 8, 2007.

The earlier deadline was changed to avoid inconveniencing holiday travelers, according to U.S. State Department spokeswoman Laura Tischler. Congress is considering extending the deadline even further, she said.

Americans will still be able to visit Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands without a passport after the new rules take effect.

On Jan. 1, 2008, passports will be required for all land-based border crossings to Canada and Mexico as well.

For more information, visit, or call the U.S. National Passport Information Center at (877) 487-2778.

Postby christelle » Wed Feb 07, 2007 11:33 am

hi KarenS, I don't know who to ask, so I'll take a chance on you. I see you've written many posts in the Guadeloupe forum, so I assume you live there or know alot about the country. Can you give me any information as to how I can obtain my French passport? I was born in Guadeloup (I'm 21) but have a Dominican passport. I've been all over to the sous prefecture, the marie, the courthouse, a lawyer, with absolutely no success. I hope you read this, and can you e-mail me directly? It's Thank you so much.
