Guadeloupe, like many islands in the Caribbean, has lots of sand and sun. But this little corner of France has much more to see, to smell and to taste
It's thrilling enough being near a volcano, but in Guadeloupe you get to tackle its slopes by car. Starting at the capital, Basse Terre, which the La Soufriere volcano buried in ash in 1976, a road climbs to 950 metres. My little Peugeot 206 performed like a mountain goat when we hit the steep, switch-backing upper reaches.
