Elections on schedule

Postby KarenS » Mon Apr 10, 2006 7:41 am

As reported in China View News: "HAVANA, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti said on Thursday that Haiti's second round of elections will be held on April 21 as scheduled, according to local media.

Damian Onses Cardona, spokesman for the UN mission known as MINUSTAH, told a news conference that all preparations had been completed for the elections.

MINUSTAH and Haiti National Police had worked out a joint security plan to ensure the second round of legislative elections run peacefully, Cardona said. Moreover, Haiti's provisional election committee, together with UN staff, had visited voting booths in different regions in Haiti.

In recent weeks, Haiti's National Disarmament Committee has held several meetings with some local organizations and political groups, and they discussed ways to avoid violence during the elections.

On April 21, voters will cast ballots to elect 27 Senate seats and 97 seats in the Chamber of Deputies."
