EU satisfed with election

As reported in China View: "BRUSSELS, Feb. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- The European Union (EU) on Tuesday expressed satisfaction with the peaceful running of the Feb. 7 presidential and parliamentary elections in Haiti, saying they will have marked an important step forward for the democraticprocess.

'The European Union welcomes the high turnout by and the serious engagement of the people of Haiti in exercising their democratic right to choose their future leaders, despite the majortechnical and logistic problems encountered during the organization of the vote,' said a statement issued by Austria, which holds the EU presidency.

'The European Union welcomes the fact that a significant turning point has been reached in carrying through the democratic transition process.'

The EU congratulated President-elect Rene Preval and reaffirmedits commitment to the people and authorities of Haiti in their efforts to rebuild and develop their country.

The EU underlined the importance of the second round of parliamentary elections, expressing the hope that they can be successful. Enditem"
