Travel & news discussion about St. Lucia

Beneath Beausejour Stadium

Postby KarenS » Fri Jun 16, 2006 7:23 am

From India News: Gros Islet (St Lucia) - The Beausejour Stadium in Gros Islet, about 8 km north of the capital Castries, in St. Lucia, is one of the most modern cricket venues in the Caribbean. It’s not just the cricketing facilities, lights for night cricket and all, but also the conveniences available for spectators.

Housed beneath the seats in all the stands are food stalls, drinks stalls, souvenir stalls - everything. There were television sets too, so that fans who were disappointed with the West Indian performance on days one, two and three, and by the rain on day four, could watch the live telecast of World Cup Football matches.

One of the food stalls, in the bowels of the F.I.C.S stand, offers Indian food, Trinidadian style - rotis and doubles. It’s run by Sania, wife of Ishwar, the Canadian World Cup player who had predicted correctly before the start of the Test that the wicket here would be a batting wicket.

The stall wasn’t doing much business, given the poor turnout for the match, but for Sania it was just a warm-up for next year’s World Cup. They have already booked their stall for that.

Sania, who is a St. Lucian, and Ishwar, from Trinidad, lived in Toronto, Canada, for a long spell, before they decided to move back here six months ago. They have set up a restaurant, called Rambally’s, in Castries.

They’ve done their bit for both teams during this Test. Sania said they had delivered food to the Indian team Saturday night while Ishwar, looking at the overcast sky and sodden ground, said Tuesday that his prayers for rain the previous night had been answered.
