Part of the Windward Island chain, St. Lucia is one of the southern islands of the Lesser Antilles, sun-baked idylls mapped with 19 active volcanoes, rock pools, rain forests, boiling craters, sulphur springs and dramatic coastlines. Mango-shaped St. Lucia, situated between Martinique and St. Vincent, feels more like a French Polynesian islet adrift in the wrong ocean, boasting the sort of lush green-draped exotica that would have inspired Gauguin into a fever of sensuous creation.
