St Lucia set to become global golf hotspot

Postby Anthony » Wed Jan 24, 2007 6:57 am

St Lucia is set to become the Caribbean's top golfing destination, according to a media report.

Moves to build four 18-hole courses on the island will make it the number one place for golf holidays in the region, reports Travel Daily News.

Although visitors can already enjoy the 6,836 yard championship course at the St Lucia Golf and Country Club, the four new resorts could be set to give the island a major tourism boost as "St Lucia will be officially recognised and promoted as a golfer destination".

One of the four resorts, located on the Cap Estate, is set to be constructed by ex-pro golfer Jack Nicklaus' golf course company Nicklaus Design.

The former three-time British Open champion described the location for his signature course as "one of the five most spectacular pieces of property [I have] ever seen".

Due for completion in early 2008, the course is set to include seven holes which play parallel to the water, meanwhile a further 11 will have views of the ocean.

Work on the Greg Norman course on St Lucia's undeveloped southeastern coast has already begun.

Meanwhile, two new 18-hole signature golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Irish architect Christy O'Connor are set to be completed by the end of 2008.

Nicklaus Design have built over 300 golf worldwide, with new resorts currently being constructed in the Bahamas, Italy, Spain and Mexico.
