Do I need a 4 wheel drive vehicle? On St. Croix? St. John? St. Thomas? Please leave answers and opinions for all islands.

I would say yes

FOR ST. JOHN:

On most of the roads you will be fine without one, but there is a very steep hill on the way to Cinnamon Bay, just before the Peter Bay neighborhood if coming from the west on Route 20 (North Shore Road), that can be a big problem, especially if wet. We were literally going backwards and had to switch it into 4-wheel drive to get up it after a rain storm (okay, a hurricane--but it had stopped raining at this point). Beyond Cinnamon is Maho, Leinster, Waterlemon, etc. so if you can't make it up this hill you'd have to turn around and use the Centerline Road, going the long way to get to those places.

Also the last parts of Route 107 to Lameshur Bay were not paved when I went in 2004. There were huge puddles and holes and I definitely would not try that without a 4-wheel drive (though I don't think you're really supposed to use that part of the road according to the rental agencies :) )

I think some of the villas have pretty steep driveways too, and if those were wet you may have a problem getting up them in 2WD.

I would definitely recommend getting a 4-Wheel Drive...it will give you comfort knowing you can go pretty much anywhere on the island.
