The forecast says rain every day! Will my trip be ruined?

Postby gwaine » Tue May 02, 2006 11:53 am

Almost every day in the Virgin Islands there is a chance for rain. Usually this means a brief downpour of 15-30 minutes. The storm leaves as soon as it came and everything is beautiful again in a few minutes. Because the islands are in the tropics this is the normal weather pattern. 9 times out of 10 the rain will be brief and your day will only have a minor slice taken out of it by the rain that keeps the islands nice and lush.

Nice one Gwaine - thanks. I will add that some months can be wetter than others - like during Hurricane season, and especially in November. The longest rains I ever saw in St. Thomas always seemed to be in that month.

Weather forecasts

Postby jmq » Wed Jul 12, 2006 1:55 pm

You should note that when the weather forecasters say "60% chance of rain", that actually means that there is a good chance that 60% of the AREA covered by the regional forecast will have some rain, and NOT that 60% of the TIME it will be raining over the region covered by the forecast.

Big difference, especially in the tropics, where showers can pop up anywhere on most days, unless you have a big tropical depression parked over the region (esp during Hurricane season) - thats when you're more likely to have a mostly rainy day (or a series of them).
