Scores of England and South Africa fans were stranded in Grenada after their cruise liner trip to Barbados was cancelled at the last minute.

The Carnival Destiny was scheduled to leave St George's on Monday evening, but it did not sail, causing headaches for world cup organisers who have already faced criticism over jammed flights.

Many of the supporters had bought tickets and accommodation in Barbados before England’s game with South Africa and complained that the trip was called off without explanation.

Denise Parke, Marketing Manager for Geo F Huggins and Co, the Grenada agents, said on-line that the trip, confirmed only last week, had been cancelled "to allow the cruise liner to meet international standards".

The operations manager, Reginald Sandy, said they were given thumbs-up for the sixteenth, but there was a change along the way.

The Barbados Tourism Authority and Carnival Destiny luxury cruise lines have been partnering with Geo. F. Huggins to provide the cruises between the two countries for the world cup matches this month.
