"Spice Island resort returns after $12M post-Ivan sprucing up (01/30/2006)

By Kristin O'Meara Hillmann

GRAND ANSE BEACH, Grenada -- The Spice Island Beach Resort celebrated its reopening on Jan. 29 with fireworks, dining and dancing for several hundred tourism executives, government officials and hotel guests here.

The 64-room resort, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 and shuttered afterward, came on line after a $12 million refurbishment in mid-December.

Owner Royston Hopkin said funding had been obtained for additional upgrades, including new landscaping and water features throughout the property.

The redesigned resort features the 3,500-square-foot Janissa's Spa, a new Children's Activity Center and new hard and soft furnishings throughout the property. In addition, Spice Island reduced its room count by two units to expand the footprint of its top-category rooms.

Hopkin said the resort was fully booked for the gala weekend and forward bookings are very strong through March, according to resort manager Brian Hardy."

Anyone have plans on staying there?
