Summer golf update for the Dominican Republic
This summer, 2011, 28 golf courses will be in operation in the Dominican Republic. This total includes five 9-hole golf courses, two courses operating with nine holes but expanding to 18 holes within the next few months, and three 27-hole golf courses and eighteen 18-hole golf courses. The golf courses are located in the eastern half of the country.
The Punta Cana coastline has the largest number of golf courses in the Dominican Republic, with 10 courses in operation, including one 27-hole course, the Cocotal (by Jose "Pepe" Gancedo), and one 9-hole golf course, the Catalonia Cabeza de Toro. Others with 18 holes are the Cana Bay Palace (Jack Nicklaus and Mark Meijer), the Punta Blanca (Nick Price), Iberostate Bavaro (PB Dye), Barcelo Golf de Bavaro (by Juan Manuel Gordillo and renovated by PB Dye), Catalonia Caribe, Corales (Tom Fazio), La Cana (PB Dye) and Punta Espada (Jack Nicklaus).
Golfing took off in La Romana at Casa de Campo in 1971, and now the resort has recently completed the renovation of the legendary 18-hole Teeth of the Dog course. Others at Casa de Campo are The Links with 18 holes, and the 27-hole Dye Fore at Altos de Chavon and the for-members La Romana Country Club with 27 holes. La Estancia, with 18-holes, is another golf course in the La Romana-Bayahibe area.
In the southeastern beach resort of Juan Dolio, there are three golf courses: Guavaberry by Gary Player with 18 holes, Los Marlins by Charles Ankrom, and Costablanca by Greg Norman that is starting off with 9 holes of its 18 holes.
Nearby is the new Naco Golf (Carlos Grullon and Ricardo Orellana-designed) members' country club, which will be especially attractive for tourists staying in the Boca Chica beach area.
The city of Santo Domingo has three golf courses, the membership Santo Domingo Country Club (H. N. Hansard), Las Lagunas (Pete Dye and Jack Corrie) and Isabel Villas (Ricardo Orellana-designed) golf courses, where play can be contracted by non-members.
On the northeastern coast, the only course is the 18-hole Playa Grande Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones. To the west, in north-central Puerto Plata, there are two golf courses in operation - 18-hole Playa Dorada (also designed by Robert Trent Jones) at the hotel complex of the same name, and the 9-hole Los Mangos in Costambar, that primarily caters for hotel guests in nearby Cofresi.
In the central mountain area of Santiago, there is 18-hole Las Aromas, designed by Pete Dye as he began his career as a golf designer. There is the 9-hole Jarabacoa Golf Club, and the 9-hole Bonao Golf Club open to play by visitors.

KLM to fly to Punta Cana
Dutch airline KLM has announced the start of flights to the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) from Amsterdam as of October. The airline says the flight is an alternative for travelers who don't want to fly KLM to the DR via the USA. The new flight will be especially attractive for passengers connecting through the Schiphol International Airport, already a major international hub for connections. The flight will leave Amsterdam at 10am with a stopover in Havana, in time to arrive in Punta Cana at 7:30pm. Return flights will be non-stop to Amsterdam, leaving at 8:30pm and arriving at 10am the following morning.
KLM president and chief executive officer Peter Hartman said "The Dominican Republic is a wonderful holiday destination and is in great demand in the Dutch market. We are looking forward to working with our partners in the travel world to make this destination a success."
Puntacana Resort & Club, the exclusive resort property in the Dominican Republic, has been named Golf Resort of the Year by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators in the 'Rest of the World' category.
Puntacana Resort & Club is currently home to two world class golf courses, P.B, Dye's La Cana and Tom Fazio's Corales, with a third, Hacienda, set to open in 2011. The P.B. Dye-designed La Cana Golf Course, which opened in 2001, has long been a firm favorite of golfers from all over the world and, in line with PCRC's efforts to be as environmentally friendly as possible, was the first course in the Caribbean to use paspalum, a grass seed that can be watered using sea water.
In April 2010, the highly anticipated Tom Fazio-designed Corales course opened to rave reviews with Golf Week's Brad Klein naming the course "The future of Caribbean golf." With the addition of Hacienda, the resort will offer 54 holes of championship golf to guests of the resort. The combination of the three courses, along with the many other amenities available to guests, makes Puntacana Resort & Club the Caribbean's premier golf and beach destination.
"Golf at Puntacana Resort & Club is truly a unique experience." said Jay Overton, director of golf and club operations at Corales. "When the opportunity presented itself to be able to head Corales I came out of retirement knowing that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a truly remarkable project."

There will be a non-stop seasonal service between Toronto's Pearson International Airport and Samana this summer. "Samana is the one of the Dominican Republic's best kept secrets and WestJet is excited to bring Canadian travelers to this part of the island," said Hugh Dunleavy, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Strategy and Planning.
"The gorgeous blend of white, sandy coastline and lush rainforests provide ample opportunity to see the local beauty and culture of the Samana area. The popularity of the Dominican Republic is soaring with the addition of destinations to our ever-expanding Caribbean network, in combination with WestJet Vacations' reputation for offering low-cost, high-value vacation packages."
WestJet will fly between Toronto and Samana once weekly until 30 October 20 10. The flight departs Toronto on Saturday at 10am, arriving in Samana at 2:10pm. The return flight leaves at 3pm, arriving in Toronto at 7:05pm.
One-way fares, available in both directions on non-stop flights only, are available from $199 plus applicable taxes and fees.
As part of its 2010 summer schedule, WestJet continues to offer year-round services from Toronto to two other Dominican Republic destinations - Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.
This is news - from our friends at DR1:
British holiday firm Thomson will offer weekly package tours to Punta Cana from 3 May to the middle of September from Glasgow Airport in Scotland. There already were summer flights to Puerto Plata and winter holiday packages to La Romana. In Scotland, Glasgow competes for the position of Scotland's busiest airport.
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "The charter market remains strong at Glasgow and many holidaymakers appear to be returning to the traditional package holiday because of the value for money and the choice of destinations they serve." She added that the addition of the new flight was good news for holidaymakers looking for great value holidays in the sun.
This is cool - one of my all time favorite golfers Fred Couples is on a tear - and he won this past weekend in the Dominican Republic:
CAP CANA, Dominican Republic (AP) -- When Fred Couples joined the Champions Tour this year, most everyone predicted success befitting a 15-time PGA TOUR winner and Masters champion.
Couples shot a 62, breaking the course record at the 7,170-yard, par-72 Punta Espada Golf Club and winning the Cap Cana Championship on Sunday by two strokes.
He made 11 birdies in the final round and finished the tournament at 21-under 195. Corey Pavin finished second.
"It was an unbelievable day," said Couples who made five birdies in a row from the second through sixth hole. "The first six or seven holes, there was an eagle, birdies and putts going in from everywhere."
The Cap Cana Championship, a PGA Champions Tour Event, will be coming up in the Dominican Republic from March 26 to 28 at the Punta Espada Golf Club.
Casa de Campo
is as good as new as of Tuesday, 22 December. The hotel has reopened following a major renovation of its rooms and suites, and a fully remodeled lobby. Also unveiled was La Cana Restaurant & Lounge by Il Circo, a fine dining restaurant with both indoor and al fresco dining, managed by the Maccioni family of Le Cirque in New York. This is the Maccioni family's second venture at Casa de Campo, following the beautiful Beach Club by Le Cirque at the resort's Minitas Beach. The fitness center has been refurbished and a new Montecristo Cigar Lounge has been added.
The new "elite" rooms feature a modern look, while maintaining the use of rich mahogany woods and Coralina stone. The rooms are equipped with 42 Led flat screen TVs and Blu-ray players and cable. Other features are alarm clock radios with dual dock for iPods and iPhones and high-speed, wireless Internet.
The new main area with its grand open spaces makes the absolute most of the surrounding natural Caribbean beauty in a minimalist design.
The main pool area has been completely renovated to include trellised platforms for early morning and late afternoon yoga classes, and shaded seating areas in natural woods and white canopies and cushions.
"Casa de Campo set the benchmark for luxury travel in the Caribbean" said general manager Alberto Grau, "and we are very excited to continue this fine reputation into the future."
British Airways prepares for the launch of its new twice-weekly service from Gatwick to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic from October 26, 2009 reinforcing its position as the airline with more flights to the Caribbean than any other UK carrier.
In addition to the flights to Punta Cana, the airline is also increasing flights to other winter sun hot-spots in the region such as St Lucia (from three to five flights a week), Barbados (from nine to ten) and Port of Spain, Trinidad (from three to five). Overall, BA will now fly 45 times a week to the Caribbean.
Richard Tams, head of sales at British Airways, said; "These new routes and increased frequencies underline our commitment to the Caribbean. It's a popular destination with our customers and it's due to demand that we're increasing the number of flights to the region. We now operate to 13 destinations in the Caribbean - more than any other UK airline."
Holidays in the Dominican Republic mean relaxing on sun-kissed beaches and snorkelling above colourful reefs, strolling along the 16th-century cobblestone streets of the capital in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone or taking a hiking holiday in the Dominican Republic's forested inland.
British Airways has a wide range of hotels in the Dominican Republic, like the 5* Dreams Palm Beach which is situated in an idyllic location, on a gorgeous beach with luxury accommodation and a fantastic kids Explorer's Club. Alternatively, those looking for pure relaxation, can try the 5* Zoetry Agua Punta Cana, offering complimentary private chauffeured return airport transfers rounding up a holiday in style.

DR1 has got the scoop on the 2009 Cap Cana PGA event:
The PGA Tour's Champions Tour, The Cap Cana Championship 2009, will take place at the Punta Espada golf course on 23-29 March. The event is a repeat of last year's successful tournament that brought some of the most famous golf champions of all times to the eastern seaside course designed by Jack Nicklaus in the luxury residential community. Mark Wiebe was last year's winner, and this year 78 golfers are expected. Last year, Jay Haas, Craig Stadler, Curtis Strange, Tom Watson, Tom Kite, Nick Price, Fred Funk, Eduardo Romero, Vicente Fernandez, Bernard Langer and Ian Woosnam also played in the tournament.
At a press conference held to announce the tournament, PGA Champions Tour president Mike Stevens said that the tournament had been an unprecedented success in all senses of the word -- given the DR's hospitality and the extent that the players enjoyed the complete experience. Our players and our work team are looking forward to returning to Cap Cana in 2009," he said. Players will compete for a US$315,000 prize for the winner, and a US$2.1 million purse. The Cap Cana Championship will be transmitted by The Golf Channel for North America, Europe and the Caribbean and ESPN Latin America for Latin America. Golf Digest magazine has ranked the Punta Espada course among the 100 best courses outside of the US. Forbes also lists it among the 10 best golf courses in the Caribbean, and Robb Report's "Best of the Best" featured it as one of the most extraordinary golf courses around the world. The course opened in November 2006 and is operated by Troon Golf. The Champions Tour is open to golfers over the age of 50. In 2009, it will be in its 30th year.

Twenty-three runway passes have been programmed for the 13-18 October benefit that will run from noon to 10pm. This is the third year of the popular event that this year includes a dedication to South American design with presentations of designers from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. New this year, the event also presents a trade exhibition where companies showcase textiles, design and fashion accessories. The event is a benefit for local charity groups.

The event will be centered at the Fun City Action Park in Puerto Plata.
Imported beers and the locally-produced beers will have their weekend. There will be beers from Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Canada and the DR.
But there will be much more. Performers Krispy, DJ Mariela, DJ Newton, Mojiganga, Banda Gorda, Jazz Tropical, Silvio Mora, Masters & Friends, Rene Arena, Brugal Orchestra, Sergio Vargas have been booked for the event. A pageant to choose Miss Dominican Fest will also be held.

September 16, 2008 - Miami, FL - Chris Evert, the world-renowned tennis icon and new wife of golf legend, Greg Norman, recently headed to Miami's sandy shores for a private reception at the Mandarin Oriental on Brickell Key. The highly-anticipated event played host to Miami's elite and top media figures. Golfweek is reporting on the resort and golf course building scene in the DR:
Course architect Tom Marzolf normally is an understated fellow. But here on the 18th tee of Corales Golf Club, perched on the Caribbean shore, the senior design associate of Tom Fazio is not even pretending to contain himself. "This could be one of the great holes anywhere," Marzolf gushes.
As he and his entourage survey the scene, a large passenger plane crosses above them on its descent into nearby Punta Cana International Airport. It's the world's only privately owned international airport - built and operated by the same Dominican consortium that developed Punta Cana Resort and Corales GC.
I have been lucky enough to golf in the DR and I would go back in a heartbeat. Some of these new courses look and sound amazing, and of course you have one of the original great courses of the Caribbean at Casa de Campo, the Teeth of The Dog. Old and new, the Dominican Republic is a great golf destination.
