GRENADA ROUND-THE-ISLAND RACE CANCELLED

Grenada, West Indies (17 February, 2010) - Due to an unforeseen emergency, the 2010 Race Committee regretfully announces that the 2010 Grenada Round-the-Island Race event, scheduled to take place on 12-14 of March, has been cancelled. The unfortunate cancelling of this event was not a decision that was made lightly or easily. It was a decision that was necessary due solely to an internal emergency that has made it impossible for the Committee to move forward with the event as planned.

Grenada Round-the-Island Race

CALLING ALL FAST YACHTS AND COMPETITIVE CREWS TO CHALLENGE THE GRENADA ROUND-THE-ISLAND COURSE RECORD!

Grenada, West Indies (20 November, 2009) - At the 2009 Grenada Round-the-Island Race (GRIR), the trimaran Horizon Region Guadeloupe shattered the race course record, slashing more than an hour off the previous record by crossing the finish line with an elapsed time of 3 hours, 54 minutes and 2 seconds. This new sailing record raises the bar of competition for the 2010 GRIR and poses an exciting challenge for boats everywhere. As such, the Grenada South Coast Yacht Club has responded by creating a prestigious prize for any vessel that breaks the record, upping the stakes for the 2010 GRIR!

New ferry service for Eastern Caribbean Islands

Interesting story out from the AP:

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA -- Those seeking a new way to explore the eastern Caribbean islands might soon have another option.

A ferry slated to serve Barbados, St. Lucia, Trinidad, Grenada and St. Vincent is expected to start operating daily by late October, according to Grenada-based BEDY Ocean Line.

Prices will range from $120 to $140, and some trips will last up to nearly four hours, CEO Benjamin Ross said Tuesday.

The announcement comes as travellers face pricier airline tickets, increased baggage restrictions and canceled flights by regional carrier LIAT due to wage disputes.

One ferry will be based in St. Vincent and serve Barbados and St. Lucia, while another will operate out of Grenada and serve Trinidad and Barbados, Ross said. Between 260 to 300 seats will be available per ferry.

Passengers will be allowed to carry two 60-pound (27-kilogram) suitcases without charge, and alcohol is prohibited on board.

In 2005, Barbadian company Remac Tours announced it would offer ferry service between Barbados and Guadeloupe, with stops in St. Lucia, Dominica and Martinique. But the service was never begun for internal reasons not related to costs or demand, CEO Reynold McClean said.

Currently, only a couple of ferries operate between Florida and the Bahamas and among Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

GRENADA ROUND-THE-ISLAND RACE

grenada-round-the-island.jpgGRENADA ROUND-THE-ISLAND RACE (October 15, 2008) Grenada - The historic and prestigious Grenadian sailing event is getting wind in her sails, returning for our 2009 race! The 7th Annual Grenada Round-the-Island Race kicks off on March 13th on the magnificent Grand Anse Beach, presented by the Grenada South Coast Yacht Club (GSCYC). This year's race hosts a ton of exciting water sports competitions-in addition to the main race there will be a youth boating exhibition, not to mention the Bath Tub Derby brought back by popular demand. But the climax of the weekend activities, from March 13th to the 15th, will no doubt be the greeting of the crews after a long all day sail around the island followed by a huge Post Race Ceremony, Party and Prize Giving. Special acts to be announced!
In addition to a lot of fun in the sun, there will be a tribute to Peter Spronk's legacy which we hope will raise funds for the first annual GSCYC's youth sailing scholarship.
