Devastating Earthquake in Haiti

This is just a terrible tragedy and unfortunately the news is probably going to start getting worse as it trickles out. Communications are obviously hit hard and not much first hand reporting is coming out yet:

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic --Rescue teams struggled in the early morning darkness Wednesday to make their way through the rubble of collapsed buildings after a devastating earthquake struck Haiti late Tuesday afternoon.

The quake, with a magnitude estimated at 7.0, caused the collapse of the National Palace, leveled countless shantytown dwellings and brought more suffering to a nation that was already the hemisphere's poorest and most disaster-prone.

Haiti to open two new hotels

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, January 7, 2010 - An American hotel franchise is about to open two new hotels in Haiti.

Choice Hotels International said Comfort Inn and Ascend Collection would be launched in the Caribbean island, to add to the company's 6,000 franchised properties worldwide.

The hotels will be the first Choice-brand properties in Haiti. The Comfort Inn hotel which will open this year will mark the first global hotel brand that the island of Haiti has hosted in more than a decade.
