DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM LAUNCHES NEW TOOL FOR WEDDING GROUPS ON VISITUSVI.COM WEB SITE

~ "Request for Proposal" functionality for destination weddings is latest in series of enhancements to tourism Web site~

image001.jpg

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, May 23, 2010 - The Department of Tourism has launched a new feature on its tourism web site, VisitUSVI.com that makes it easier than ever for couples planning a wedding in the Territory.

As part of the Department's ongoing strategy to market the destination to key niche segments, the new Request for Proposal (RFP) functionality on VisitUSVI.com makes requesting destination wedding information a hassle-free, efficient process for couples. Rather than sifting through dozens of web sites and wedding service providers, couples can simply submit one wedding RFP form (*editors, see attached) directly from VisitUSVI.com and receive responses from on-island wedding consultants, properties, and other service suppliers with information and price quotes to plan their special day. The RPF form is currently distributed to more than 40 on-island wedding service providers.

The new page allows couples to submit a request including information about the event date and time, theme, guests, hotels, and other details about their wedding plans. Launched just two weeks ago, the feature is already proving to be a big success. To date, more than 40 requests have already been received using the new functionality.

"To remain competitive with destination wedding locations, we knew this functionality was a necessity for our Web site," said Commissioner of Tourism, Beverly Nicholson-Doty. "Weddings represent approximately 7-10 percent of business to the Territory, which equates to $15-20 million dollars annually. We're pleased to have this new interactive element on VisitUSVI.com that contributes to making the user experience more engaging for couples planning a wedding."

The Wedding RFP is a part of the Department's overall marketing commitment to the bridal segment. Its current $521,000 media buy includes advertising in Destination Weddings and Honeymoons and on destinationweddingmag.com, theknot.com, Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides and Marrycaribbean.com, among others.

Any licensed wedding service-provider that wishes to be included on the form's recipient list may contact the Department of Tourism to make this request.

DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM TARGETS DIVE ENTHUSIASTS WITH SUMMER PROMOTION

~ Offer features $450 in savings to grow key segment ~

image001.jpg

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, May 17, 2011 - Designed to drive interest and summer bookings from a key segment for travel to the Territory, the Department of Tourism has launched a new dive promotion to entice enthusiasts to explore the stunning walls, wrecks, reefs, piers and shores of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Launched on May 1, the DOT's new Dive USVI Promotion offers divers the opportunity to save $450 on their U.S. Virgin Islands dive vacation and is being supported with a targeted print and online advertising campaign as well as public relations efforts.

The Dive USVI Promotion provides visitors who book at least six nights with $300 in dive certificates at participating dive shops across St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas, $50 in retail certificates and $100 in restaurant certificates per room reservation. The offer will be available for booking through September 15 for travel from May 15 through October 31, 2011.

"The dive market continues to be a priority segment for the Territory," said Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty. "The USVI is one of the few places in Caribbean where travelers can experience five types of dives: wall, wreck, reef, pier and shore. Our goal with this offer is to showcase our unique appeal to the dive community while driving business to our dive shops across the Territory and benefiting our local economy over the summer months."

The DOT has invested $150,000 in an advertising campaign that is running through September. The campaign includes buys in prominent diving publications such as Sport Diver magazine and Dive Training magazine. Additionally digital media buys, including web banners, e-newsletters, custom microsites, and e-blasts have been placed via Scubadiving.com, Sportdiver.com and Scubaboard.com.

Twelve dive shops on St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas will participate in this offer including: Anchor Dive Center, Cane Bay Dive Shop, Inc., Dive Experience, N2 the Blue, St. Croix Ultimate Bluewater Adventures and Sweet Bottom Dive Center on St. Croix; Admiralty Dive Center, Aqua Action Dive Center, Coki Beach Dive Club, Red Hook Dive Center and St. Thomas Diving Club on St. Thomas and Cruz Bay Watersports on St. John.

Details of the package are available on the "Packages and Promotions" page of VisitUSVI.com, including the list of dive shops through which the package may be reserved. Restrictions apply.

HIGH-PROFILE FILM AND EDITORIAL PROJECTS YIELD POSITIVE RESULTS FOR THE TERRITORY

~Recent on-location film projects and promotional partnerships with media generate national exposure for the USVI and stimulate local economy ~

image001.jpg
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, May 10, 2011 - A number of high-profile on-location film, video and still projects recently took place in the Territory that have benefited the U.S. Virgin Islands and will continue to do so. Select projects injected significant funds into the local economy while a series of on-island photo shoots and national broadcast opportunities showcasing the destination's offerings to potential visitors have and will continue to generate positive exposure for the Territory.

In April, the production team for a major motion picture filmed scenes on St. Thomas, employing more than 60 residents and utilizing services from several local businesses. The estimated on-island spend was close to $1 million over the course of just one week. The DOT will continue to work with the production company's executives to explore the potential for partnerships around the film's release as well as future projects.

In keeping with the Department's 2011 marketing strategy, the marketing team secured coverage for the destination through on-island photo shoots and national broadcast opportunities. These valuable opportunities yield high return on investments and share key destination branding messages with consumer audiences.

A photo-shoot held in St. Thomas over a five-day period earlier this year yielded 11 pages of coverage and roughly 4.3 million media impression in Essence magazine's May issue. In a three-page spread, supermodel Toccara Jones, a former America's Next Top Model contestant, is photographed with a friend across various sites including The Royal Dane Mall, Oceana, Blackbeard's Castle and Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa. In a separate eight-page fashion feature, a model shows off colorful spring clothing and accessory trends amidst the foliage of Villa Botanica. More St. Thomas coverage is slated to appear in the June issue.

DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM ENCOURAGES USVI RESIDENTS TO SUPPORT BOLONGO BAY BEACH RESORT IN ABOUT.COM READERS' CHOICE AWARDS

~Resort is one of five "Best All Inclusive Resort" finalists; must receive the most votes to win~

U.S. Virgin Islands, March 3, 2011 - The Department of Tourism is pleased to announced that the Territory's own Bolongo Bay Beach Resort has earned a coveted spot as one of the five "Best All Inclusive Resort" finalists in About.com's Readers' Choice Awards.

To become a finalist, Bolongo Bay beat out all inclusive hotels and resorts throughout North America, the Caribbean and Mexico in the initial write-in phase of the awards. This is a huge feat for the independent 62-room resort.
Now, Bolongo Bay needs the help of the on-island community to bring the title of "The Best All Inclusive" home to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Bolongo Bay is the smallest resort in the competition, which includes hotels more than ten times its size located in Mexico, Hawaii, the Dominican Republic and Pennsylvania.

"It's important that we show our support when any of our hoteliers or tourism partners has an opportunity to be recognized internationally by consumers and industry professionals," said Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty. "The more accolades our hotels, attractions, restaurants, activity/tour operators and tourism personalities receive, the better off we all are as a destination, as these awards play a crucial role in attracting visitors to the Territory."

Voting will remain open in the About.com Readers' Choice Awards until Tuesday, March 8, 2011. To vote for Bolongo Bay in the All Inclusive Resort category, visit: http://hotels.about.com/od/uniqueandunusualhotels/ss/Finalists-Readers-Choice-Awards-2011_4.htm and click on the resort's name under "Cast Your Vote."

CAPE AIR INCREASES CARIBBEAN FLIGHT SCHEDULE

More flights into the U.S. and British Virgin Islands then any Other Airline

November 25, 2008 Hyannis, MA - "This winter season no one gets you to your vacation destination in the Virgin Islands faster and more conveniently then Cape Air," says airline founder and CEO Dan Wolf. "We are meeting the unprecedented demand for service by sending additional planes to the Caribbean giving us a total of 25 aircraft available to meet the hourly schedule of flights between San Juan and not only the US and British Virgin Islands but also Vieques, Cape Air's newest island destination."

For over a decade Cape Air, the largest independent regional airline in the United States, has been providing service between San Juan and the Virgin Islands. Wolf says this year the advance bookings have dramatically increased in response to a major reduction in service from the major carriers who used to fly to the Islands. "We expect to fly about 1,000 passengers daily between the islands this upcoming season, up about 70% from last year." says Wolf. "In addition to the hourly service, passengers can also enjoy the seamless convenience of our ticket and baggage agreements with most major airlines including our code share partner Continental Airlines. Check your bags at your departure and find them waiting for you at your island destination."

You can book Cape Air flights directly from Caribbean-On-Line starting on our Caribbean Airlines page, at www.flycapeair.com, or by calling Cape Air's reservations department at 800 352-0714.

St. Croix to Welcome First Ship of the Season

Big news for the U.S. Virgin Islands and St. Croix as cruise ships return:

~ Ship visit this Friday marks the return of cruise ships to St. Croix~

ST. CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands, November 26, 2008 - St. Croix will welcome the first cruise ship of the season this Friday when the Oceania Regatta docks at the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility in Frederiksted, marking the return of regularly scheduled cruise calls to St. Croix after a long hiatus.

Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty said, "Over the past year and a half the Government of the Virgin Islands under the leadership of Governor John de Jongh has worked very diligently to persuade the cruise lines to add St. Croix to their itineraries and we are extremely pleased to now welcome the first cruise passengers of the season to the island." She added, "We must all take the opportunity to make our guests feel welcome and show the world that St. Croix is a destination rich in history, culture, natural beauty and warm hospitality."

Welcome festivities planned by the Department of Tourism begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until the ship's departure at 6:00 p.m. Entertainment includes performances by the Rising Stars Steel Pan Orchestra, The Guardians of Culture Mocko Jumbies, the St. Croix Educational Complex Quelbe Band and the St. Croix Heritage Dancers. As the 684 cruise passengers disembark, they will be greeted by mocko jumbies dancing to the sounds of steel pan music as well as greeters from the Department of Tourism offering recommendations on the day's activities, souvenirs and Cruzan rum samples. Crew members will receive USVI-branded phone cards and information about the island. A private "Plaque and Keys" ceremony is also planned aboard the ship where Nicholson-Doty will present a plaque to the ship's captain commemorating the ship's inaugural visit to St. Croix.

After passengers have enjoyed a day of shopping, sightseeing tours and other adventures, they will be bid farewell by Department of Tourism greeters, more local entertainment and a St. Croix t-shirt gift.

At the direction of Governor John P. de John, Jr., The Department of Tourism and other agencies have been working for months to ready the destination for the return of cruise ships. In

August, the Department of Tourism and the Economic Development Authority hosted the Preparing the Path conference on St. Croix aimed at preparing the community for the return of the cruise industry. The free conference, attended by nearly 200 participants, covered topics from customer service and tour operations to marketing native arts and crafts and starting a business. In November, the agencies sponsored two days of free customer service training designed to prepare local business leaders and their front-line employees for the arrival of cruise passengers.

To create greater awareness within the St. Croix community about the return of cruise ships, the Department of Tourism also launched a local advertising campaign themed, "St. Croix - It's our Time to Shine." The campaign includes ads counting down the days to the arrival of the first cruise ship, as well as print and radio ads featuring members of the St. Croix community. The campaign emphasizes community pride and the importance of a good first impression.

The Department of Tourism worked closely with other government agencies including the VI Police Department, Housing Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Licensing and Consumer Affairs and the VI Port Authority to ensure readiness. Nicholson-Doty noted, "Our sister agencies deserve much credit for their efforts in preparing for the influx of cruise visitors. From improving roads, repairing public restrooms, organizing clean-ups and securing a police presence, the collaborative efforts of the various government agencies underscore the fact that it takes the entire community to make tourism a success."

The next scheduled cruise call is on January 5, 2009. More than 60 calls are scheduled for St. Croix in 2009.

Virgin Islands Webcams

Some Caribbean webcam news today from the U.S. and British Virgin Islands:

The biggest news is the great new cam from St. John Spice with a view of the passenger ferry dock and Cruz Bay - check out this shot! St. John Spice hosted a similar view for another website for several years, but this new cam is their own. If you are coming to St. John, make sure to look up and wave when getting off the passenger ferry - and then head up the stairs to say hi to Ruth and Ron and buy some grill rub or other great spices and gifts.

We lost a Coral Bay, St. John view from the V.I. Daily News (I guess they just took the cam down or it is broken), but we added a new view from them of Long Bay and the Havensight cruise dock on St. Thomas.

There is also a new roving cam on Anegada in the B.V.I. called "De Anegada Webcam". If you don't know Anegada, it is a fairly remote coral atoll sitting all by itself north east of Tortola - we have stayed there and written about Anegada before. This cam doesn't always broadcast, and changes locations, so it is worth checking out often. Last week it was at Cow Wreck Bay - today's view I am not so sure of.

September a slow month for USVI hoteliers

The St. Thomas Source is reporting that things are slow for hotels this September - for some hoteliers it is shaping up to be as slow as after the terror attack on 9/11:

"September is 50 percent off from last year," said Richard Doumeng, manager at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort.

August was better at Bolongo -- down only 15 to 20 percent from the same month last year.

This has been Bolongo's worst fall since 2001, the year terrorists attacked the United States, Doumeng said.

"November '08 looks similar to November '01," he said.

At Caneel Bay Resort on St. John, occupancy has dropped to about 18 percent after running about 85-percent full on Labor Day, down just 1 percentage point from the same time last year, said Manager Nikolay Hotze. However, Caneel has an all-inclusive plan for this September to bring guests into the resort.

I was living on St. Thomas in 2001 - that was a tough period. It seems the combination of the economy, fuel prices, and hurricanes have keep a lot of people home this fall.
