USVI LAUNCHES INITIATIVE TO ADDRESSS CONFUSION ABOUT TRAVEL OPTIONS TO TERRITORY

Frankly I am more confused by this news than I was when I was ignorant of it:

~ Move in response to American Airlines and Delta Air Lines withdrawing flight listings from popular online travel sites~

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, January 6, 2011 - The Department of Tourism has announced several steps it is taking to help eliminate confusion among travelers about alternate ways to book packaged travel to the Territory as result of recent news reports that American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are withdrawing flight listings from popular online travel sites.

Many travelers may be surprised by the news that American Airlines flights can no longer be booked on Orbitz.com and Expedia.com and Delta Air Lines flights are no longer available on CheapOAir.com, OneTravel.com, and BookIt.com. These moves impact the options available to potential visitors to book air and land packaged vacations to the Territory.

To clarify traveler questions and remind potential visitors of the many remaining options to book packaged vacations, the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism has developed a dedicated section on the tourism Web site, VisitUSVI.com (www.visitusvi.com/travel_transportation/from_here), that provides an updated list of tour operators and online travel sites that continue to offer air and land packaged vacations to the U.S. Virgin Islands featuring American Airlines and/or Delta Air Lines.

To generate awareness, the DOT has disseminated an announcement to key members of the travel industry trade and consumer media and will distribute updates via its Twitter and Facebook pages as well.

"We recognize that American Airlines' and Delta's decisions to withdraw flight listings from these popular online travel sites, which represent a significant source of packages sold to the Territory on these airlines, have the potential to create a serious impact on travel" noted Commissioner Nicholson-Doty. "We are reaching out to travelers via travel trade and leisure travel media outlets as well as social media platforms to remind them of the online and offline tour operators who continue to offer USVI trips featuring American Airlines and/or Delta Air Lines service. Our goal is to ensure a balance of supporting all available channels for travelers to book packaged travel to the Territory."
