A Pink Sand Paradise in The Bahamas

harbour-island-bahamas-1.jpgMy favorite Bahamian out island, Harbour Island or Briland as it is known to residents, is approximately 3.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide. Quaint New England style architecture and miles of pink sand beach puts this out island firmly on the best tropical island list.

Dunmore Town, the main and only town on Harbour Island, is one of the oldest settlements in The Bahamas, with colorful wooden homes dating from the late 1700's. The island is located approximately 200 miles from Miami, 60 miles from Nassau/Paradise Island and two miles East of Eleuthera.
Tip: Roaming about the island by golf cart is de rigeur.

Harbour Lounge near the ferry dock for excellent blackened grouper. Drink the local brew - Kalik.
Queen Conch, a local fish shack on the waterfront serves conch and other sea foods al fresco.
Angela's Starfish Restaurant. No starfish are served in this local resto, and you might not even want anything on the mostly 'fried in oil' menu, but do try the excellent home made pies, especially the key lime! Eat in the garden.

harbour-island-bahamas-4.jpgRecommended Hotels:
In Dunmore Town: Bahama House Inn
On the beach: Coral Sands Hotel
Romantic and expensive: Rock House

Transportation on Island:
Although you can walk easily to just about anywhere, rent a golf cart for about $50 a day- it'll take you to some stretches of beach that are virtually deserted.

Getting there:
While you can fly from Nassau into adjacent Eleuthera and take a combination of taxi and water taxi to get to Dunmore Town, it's easier and likely more enjoyable to take the 2.5 hour ferry trip. Departures daily at 8am from Potters Cay in Nassau, returning from Harbour Island at 4pm. There is a short stop at another small island, Spanish Wells, both ways. $110 Round trip

Hi Don

Have to agree with you -- Harbour Island is one of our favorite destinations in the Bahamas. We spent a number of years visiting there -- Rock House being one of our favorite places to stay.

As a result of our many stays, we also found time to make some day trips to Eleuthera which is has a number of excellent beaches and interesting small / quaint Bahamian style towns. I don't know if you've spent any time there, but it's well worth the visit.

You can see some of the photos I've collected from there on a web site I developed for the island: Eleuthera website. Hope you and your readers will enjoy.
