Nassau Public Library and Museum

nassau-library-1.jpgArchitecture fans take note! The octagonal former prison for 'criminals and public enemies' which dates from 1800, is currently occupied by the Public Library. Due to the unusual shape, the library houses their stacks in former cells that radiate out like the spokes of a wheel from the central reading room.

The library is located on Shirley Street in downtown Nassau, near the court buildings.

Tip: Guide yourself up a flight of stairs to the covered top floor, which offers a fine 360 degree panorama of the surrounding area.

Hours: 10am-8pm Monday-Thursday, 10am-5pm on Friday, 10am-4pm on Sunday. Admission is free.
