Trunk Bay, St. John - a picture perfect beach

trunk-bay.jpgTrunk Bay on St. John in the USVI is a heart-shaped, quarter mile of perfect sand that magically reveals itself as you round a bend in the mountainous road that leads here from the island's main town, Cruz Bay.

Exquisite, clear turquoise waters set against stark white sand has made this picturesque bay one of the world's most famous. Surrounded by graceful coconut palms, Trunk Bay is renowned for it's snorkeling. There's 650 feet of marked trails designed for the flipper and mask crowd.

Laurence Rockefeller donated 5000 acres of pristine land in St. John to the United States National Park Service in 1956 under the condition that it be protected from future development. Currently, a whopping two-thirds of the entire island falls within the protection of the Park Service.

Note: As part of the National Park, Trunk Bay is the only beach on St. John that has an admission fee: $4 for adults. Hours are 8am to 4pm with lifeguards on duty daily.

Facilities: As befitting a National Park you can find showers, bathrooms, changing areas, public telephones, picnic tables and barbeque grills. A gift shop provides just about everything you might need while at the beach, such as sun screen, towels, insect repellent, hats, tee-shirts, bathing suits, film, batteries, books, post cards and souvenirs. Lockers, snorkel equipment, floatation devices and beach chairs can all be rented here. Forgot your picnic basket? No worries, there's a snack bar.

Tip: Here's the hitch: this beach can get really crowded! While cruise ships can't dock at St. John, they can at neighboring St.Thomas. Watch out, for numbers can climb as high as 1,000 sun worshippers in a single day. Keep your ears open for info on sudden tourist infestations.

Always a great day at Trunk. If you show up early enough you can avoid the crowds for a while - or just make sure you go when there aren't too may cruise ships on St. Thomas. This is a great beach for kids too - they really get into the snorkel "trail".

Crowded? Ever been to the Jersey Shore? I'm sure it is more crowded in high season but I've never felt crowded at that beach.
Last time there we were so early we didn't have to pay and there was not another soul in sight! Can't beat it. Magnificent!
