Enjoy classic Thai delicacies and visit their new rooftop bar. Tel. 625-0647.

Our favorite place for an introduction to callaloo, flying fish, fried plantains, fresh juices and other Trini specialties is Woodford Café (3. Port of Spain Map Map D-5). Tel. 622-CAFE. Everybody's favorite spot for a view of Port of Spain, exotic drinks and tasty Polynesian fare is Tiki Village (4. Port of Spain Map Map A-4) atop the Kapok Hotel. Tel. 622-5765.

In Chaguaramas the Lighthouse Restaurant at Crews Inn (5. Trinidad Map C-3) offers chicken satay, flying fish and chips and fresh salads overlooking the impressive yachts in the marina. Tel. 634-4384. On Maracas Bay-a beautiful drive from town-there are endless stalls selling "shark and bake," a local treat of fried bread filled with shark served with a variety of sauces.

Cocos Hut (6. Trinidad Map A-6) at Laguna Mar on the beautiful north coast serves the freshest seafood-lobster is a favorite-and local dishes like chicken in coconut milk, often prepared by the owner, Fred, himself. Informal and very friendly. Tel. 628-3731.

At the ASA Wright Nature Center (7. Trinidad Map B-6) lunch, dinner and afternoon tea are served featuring creole dishes with fruits and vegetables grown at the Center. Delicious fruit salads, homemade jams and jellies on just-baked breads, coconut ice cream with mango sauce. Day visitors must reserve ahead. Tel. 667-4655.

 Tobago Dining:
All locations Dining are for the Tobago Map. (The area code for all phone numbers is 868)

  1. Arnos Vale Waterwheel Restaurant (Tobago Map D-3) ...660-0815
Modern Caribbean cuisine. Crab and papaya salad, "zarzuela" of snapper, prawns and lobster, with homemade coconut ice cream for dessert. Call about their "River Theatre."
  2. Best of Thymes (Tobago Map F-1) ...639-0207
Local herbs and spices are used here. Try conch in coconut ginger sauce, shrimp with ginger and lemongrass, and their own carrot cake and cheesecake. Open for breakfast (with homemade bread and Danish!), lunch and dinner.
  3. Eleven Degrees North (Tobago Map F-1) ...639-0996
"New World Cuisine" offers Mexican, Cajun and Caribbean flavors. Start with stuffed jalapeños, then shrimp creole or seafood enchiladas, topped with carmelized bananas over ice cream in a coconut shell! The Old Time Jammers provide music for dancing Tuesdays and Thursdays in season.
  4. The Emerald Restaurant (Tobago Map E-2) ...639-0539
Creole or garlic shrimp, callaloo soup and a grilled lobster said to be the most tender on the island make this a popular spot. Vegetarian dishes and fresh salads also available, as is a menu for children (or small appetites).
  5. Rouselles (Tobago Map E-4) ...639-4738
Try their local fare-grilled lobster with lemon, wine, butter and garlic, dolphin or grouper with one of their tasty sauces. Each night there's a different homemade dessert to enjoy. Nice atmosphere overlooking the sea.
  6. Old Donkey Cart (Tobago Map E-4) ...639-3551
Creole-style or grilled dolphin, spicey pork, Caribbean pasta and madras shrimp are sure to please here, in a garden setting. Occasional steel band music in season.
  7. Toucan Inn/Bonkers (Tobago Map F-1) ...639-7173
Curried lamb, jumbo garlic shrimp and local lobsters in garlic and lemon are favorites. Most nights there's live entertainment. Call ahead to see what's scheduled.
